Crossing the color line...

...one time too many.

A special thanks goes out to the media who continuously drives home the fact that black folks finally have a legitimate presidential candidate and two Superbowl coaches.

Thank you. Now enough, already. Damn.

What are you talkin' about Dre? Are you sure that these aren't white guys who just have real bad tans?

Anonymous said...

I'm actually feelin' you on this. But you gotta be careful not to offend our folks during black history month and all...

I know I'm just some white liberal with a cause, but I think its pretty refreshing to see the media showcase blacks in a positive light. What's the problem?

Now that I think of it, I do see pretty distinguishable tan lines around Coach Dungy's eyes.

But maybe you're right. Perhaps I should tone it down for Black History Month. *sarcasm*

Rob, I never said I had a problem with it. I'm just sick of it.

Hey Dre,
Great post as usual! Did you see Joe Biden's quote? Things to buy Joe for Christmas; 1)Mouth filter 2)Brain filter. I found the link that I was telling you about, the Parody that Ben Franklin wrote justifying slavery of white people. As I told you, he died disappointed that people didn't see the relation to what we were doing to black people. http://sniggle.net/historicus.php Ben=visionary- The rest of us=still aways to go.

@ HC: I caught Sen. Biden's remarks. It's exactly what I think is unfortunate about this country as it relates to race relations. I get his intentions, but I also think there was more at work.

For instance, I have a history of doing public speaking in large forums. Despite my stutter, I usually do pretty well. I remember on a few occassions, whites would come up to me and tell me how well I spoke. Truthfully, I couldn't tell if they were just sincerely complimenting me or if they were parentheically saying that I speak well for a black guy. If I was white, would I get that same praise...or would great speaking be expected of me? Now, I'm not implying that I go around being paranoid about what people think of me. I'm just pointing out how years of racism have shaped the psyche of black Americans; to the point where even compliments can potentially offend us. It's hard to explain...

@ zzop: What I'm about to say I REALLY don't mean disrepectfully (this is my disclaimer): As noble as your ideas are, I think that 'color-blindness' is just a politically-correct facade used to cover up hidden, unenlightened, or unclaimed prejudices (not just from whites, by the way. Blacks, Latinos, etc. who claim to be color blind are also fooling themselves). The fact is: when I see whites, I SEE whites. When I see blacks, I SEE blacks. In fact, I think that it affects how we initally approach someone. How we respond to those people, on the other hand, is largely shaped by the attributes they possess. If I didn't come across as a non-threatening, somewhat educated, decent guy who DIDN'T have gold teeth in his mouth, I really don't think you would've stop by my blog.

The best way to remedy race relations, in my opinion, is not to kid ourselves about NOT being different; but rather to recognize our differences and prejudices and build from there.

That's what I think anyway.

Thanks for your comments and welcome to my "head"! I'm warning you: it can get a little turbulent in here...

As I watched the SB, I counted 6 references from commentators about the black coaches, and I saw four commericals (mostly from Coke).

Dre, I think you might've had a point here.

@ KC: I'm not sure if you noticed, but I really appreciated the way that Coach Dungy laid it down during the post-game interviews. While the media stood on their hands waiting for him to respond to the sensationalized 'race' questions, he gave them something with far more substance: He gave them Christ.

I was celebrating all night when I heard that.

@ zzop: I'm sorry. I'm a bit lost on that one. Can you elaborate?
