Uh oh.
Apparently, the US has broken its ties with the Hamas-controlled Palestine. This move came only a few weeks after we plotted with Israel to get rid of the Hamas altogether ; undoubtedly paving the way for more turmoil to mount in the Middle East. What I don't get is how the U.S. and Israel can get so wrapped up in their warped sense of values/morality, thereby creating more unrest than what they claim to want to eliminate. They try to promote freedom and democracy, and then call Palestine evil since they selected the Hamas (emphasis on the word selected).
No matter how you slice it, the Hamas regime is product of free elections. For the West to oppose and, ultimately, attempt to destabilize, a government created under the process of democracy is hypocritcal; especially when they want democracy to be the world's mantra.
This just goes to show: Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it...

I think a lot of people, including a great many of our government leaders, have not thought through the democratic process.
A democratic vote and arrival at a policy or decision does not guarantee that the policy or decision will be morally or politically agreeable to everyone. If forty people vote 30 to 10 to allow open trafficking in terrorism, the decision was arrived at democratically, whether the minority agrees with the decision or not.
Basically, all a democracy means is that the majority rules, whether the majority is morally right or politically correct.

You make some great points. I agree that democracy is a ideal that hasn't been well thought out...even as it relates to our own country and its formation ("freedom and democracy" were REALLY only limited to middle-aged, white men who owned land and slaves. That would've excluded both you and me...)
I think this only reinforces the idea that our nation should stop trying to impose our way of life on other nations. Because, no matter what type of methods a nation decides to operate under, their true ideology will always rise to surface.
The "democratic" electoral process in Palestine was successful, alright. It democratically produced a government with ties to terror.
I mean, even Hitler was voted for 'democratically'...
I knew this was going to happen. The minute that something...anything...backfires against the US, you liberals would jump all over Bush and the nation. It's sad that, as a terrorist threat is staring right at us, you could sit here and whine and cry about the government.

@ anonymous: It's funny. When I first started a blog, I got a couple of comments from obviously slanted conservatives. On the opposite spectrum, I also received a few comments from people who were unquestionably liberal. Both sides typically make me sick. Initially, I planned to delete any traces of lone partisanship from my blog. But, in an effort to value EVERYONE'S input (as ridiculous as some people's ideas can be), I decided to keep the posts. That said, even though your views are pretty blantantly one-sided, they are YOUR views. To deny you the opportunity to share your ideas would be hypocritical on my end.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, let me respond...
The government's claim to promote democracy around the world has been demonstrated on a number of occasions; mostly in a backfire sense. Oddly, the fraudulent elections staged in Afghanistan and Iraq (under the watchful eye of US occupying forces, by the way) have been hailed by YOU PEOPLE as models of democracy, while Hamas’s victory in Palestine was immediately denounced as illegitimate. Have you ever thought about how hypocritical that is?

I agree with lenadianejennings, well said L. I would like to add that we're under no obligation to continue to support Palestine to the tune of 90 million a year (as we have for the past 10) either. if they're going to elect a terrorist organization, more power to them, but, neither the U.S. nor Israel should send money to them as long as their mission is to destroy Israel and the Zionists (us).
